The headlights in a lone car peirced the thickness of the deserted road. A couple was headed for San Francisco. The woman sat peering out to the dark shapes of trees and bushes that lined the road, help her husband keep watch against the hazards of the twisting trail.
“Luke, this place gives me the crips.”
“We’ll be out of the canyon in a few minutes, Amy. Then it would be a good straight highway the rest of the way ahead.”
As the car rounded a curfe, the headlights picked up…something…a figure…a young girl – waving wildly from the side of the road.
“Luke, there’s a girl up ahead! What, in heaven’s name, was she doing out on a night like this?”
As Luke slowed down the car and stopped, the beem of the headlights ilumenited the girl.
